Electronic sports.

Electronic sports or e Sports as most people know it, is a form of sports that can only be practiced using electronic systems. Professional players compete on tournaments for a prize that sometimes is large enough to turn it into their job. These tournaments are held worldwide and many people from any country can become a superstar in this world.

Is this a real sport? Indeed it is and it’s recognized by the Olympic committee. Maybe most people
can’t believe this but this is real and the evidence are activities like chess or car races which are
recognized as sports.

Today, these tournaments manage to fill stadiums with more than 45.000 spectators but they are
not the main source of viewers because they broadcast this show online and they can have more
than 36 millions of viewers (joining every viewer in every broadcast that can be done in multiple
languages. This means these shows can gather more spectators than the NBA.

At the moment, the most popular games played are League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter Strike:
Global Offensive and FIFA 16.

The most famous players in the world can earn more than 500.000 €. The biggest example of this in
Spain is a League of Legends player called Carlos Rodríguez “Ocelote” who was a very famous player
on this world but he retired some years ago. Today he runs his own team (Gamers 2) and he makes
money by prizes, sponsors, etc… Just like a football team.

Now you are probably thinking about how a videogame like Super Mario Bros can be an eSport.
Well, not every video game is an eSport. These type of games must have some features in common:

-The game allows the confrontation between two or more players competing on an equal footing
and whose victory is determined by its tactical or strategic skill.

-Existence of official leagues and competitions with rules, teams and professional players.

-Thousands of fans who play for fun and/or follow the competitions becoming consumers of
broadcasting and media coverage of competitions.

-Media rebroadcast competitions and come into the information demand by the public.

-A parallel advertising market industry funding and sponsors clubs and competitions (most eSports
are free games).

In conclusion, eSports is a business that is getting bigger and bigger every day followed by millions
of people and making a lot of money.

Here you can see a video explaining what eSports are more graphically.
